"Two years away and I'm suddenly reminded as to why I don't want to be around these people."
"You promised you'd be nice, Hal."
I stepped off the Zeta pad, boots heavy on cold metal. The Watchtower hadn't changed. Same sterile walls, same spotless floors that looked like they'd never seen a single war. Same faint hum of alien tech and self-righteous judgment.
Same League.
"I didn't promise enthusiastic compliance," Hal muttered beside me. He adjusted his ring-engraved glove, flashing a strained grin. "Just... try not to blast anyone. That's all I ask."
"Funny," I said dryly, brushing the front of my uniform. "I thought I was here to prove I could be around my friends again, not play with them."
"And there she is! My favorite adopted niece!" Barry exclaimed and sped up to tackle me into a hug. "We've missed you, kid!"
"At least someone does," I grumbled. "How's Wall?"
"Missing his best friend and should be here soon with Kaldur to see you. Nightwing is being more annoying than usual."
"Nightwing?"
"New Robin and the old one leveled up. It's a long story that you'll hopefully hear after today's evaluation. We're all betting on you, Zar."
I smiled faintly, but it didn't reach my eyes.
The smile cracked further when I entered the council chamber.
All of them wore the same tight expressions, stoic concern, buried mistrust. Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman... even J'onn averted his gaze when I stepped inside. Like they'd already decided who I was.
"Zaria," Batman nodded once I stood in the center. "It's been a while."
"It has."
"You'd promise you'd play nice, Spooky." Hal warned, placing a hand on my shoulder as Barry stood on my other side. "Or else what's even the point of bringing her here again?"
"Zaria, we've reviewed Hal's report. Two years of progress, control training, and psychological development. But the question remains... are you a threat to your teammates?"
"No," I said, sharper than I meant. "I'm a threat to people who deserve it."
