The morning after Blue's birthday felt calm, like the world had exhaled just for a moment.
The room was quiet except for the hum of the ultrasound machine. Beyoncé lay back on the table, her hand gripping mine tightly. The tech squirted the gel on her belly and gently pressed the wand down.
I watched the screen, searching for something — anything — I could understand. The image was fuzzy at first, like clouds swirling in black and white. Then, we heard it.
Ba-dump. Ba-dump. Ba-dump.
The heartbeat.
Beyoncé gasped, her other hand flying to her mouth as her eyes welled up. I felt her squeeze my hand, and I squeezed back just as hard, blinking fast.
"That's one strong heartbeat," the doctor said with a smile. But then she paused, adjusting the screen slightly. Her eyes narrowed with a little focus. "Hang on a moment..."
Beyoncé turned to her, concerned. "What is it?"
The doctor's smile grew. "I'm just making sure I'm seeing this correctly..."
She pointed to the screen. "That right there... is baby number two. You're having twins."
My mouth dropped open.
Beyoncé stared at the screen in complete disbelief. "Twins?"
The doctor nodded. "Two healthy heartbeats. Congratulations."
Beyoncé immediately burst into tears... quiet, overwhelmed, happy tears. I pulled her into me as much as I could from the side of the table, kissing her temple while I tried to wrap my head around it all.
I blinked at the screen, then back at the doctor. My heart was pounding so loud I could barely hear myself speak.
"Wait... are you sure?" I asked, still gripping Bey's hand.
The doctor gave a soft laugh, kind but firm. "I'm definitely sure. Two babies, two heartbeats. They're both right here."
She angled the monitor slightly toward us and pointed, tracing around the two little figures on the screen. I stared, eyes wide, trying to process it. My mouth was dry. I swallowed hard.
"Bey," I said, glancing down at her. She looked just as stunned as I felt, one hand over her mouth and tears already falling.
"I... I didn't expect that," she said quietly, voice trembling with emotion. "Two babies..."
The room felt still for a moment, and then she looked up at me, smiling through her tears. "We're having twins."
I didn't even realize I was crying too until one rolled down my cheek. I leaned over and kissed her forehead. My lips lingered there as I whispered, "You're incredible."
She laughed softly, a shaky breath escaping. "You better be ready. Two babies mean double the midnight feedings, double the crying, double the diapers..."
I pulled back just enough to look into her eyes. "Double the love. That's all I care about."
The doctor smiled and wiped off the ultrasound wand. "Everything looks great so far. They're measuring right where they should be. We'll schedule your next visit in a few weeks and keep an eye on things."
Beyoncé sat up slowly, still dazed, and I handed her a tissue. She dabbed at her eyes and gave me this look like she was just as in awe of me as I was of her.
"I love you," she whispered.
I touched her cheek, heart racing. "I love you too. So much."
We were quiet as we walked out of the room, hands clasped tightly like we were afraid to let go.
