"Red, put this on. There's Joker Venom and Fear Toxin everywhere."
"But I already have one?" I tilted my head as Batman placed a mask over my mouth. "And what is Joker Venom?"
Batman tightened the straps of the mask firmly around my face. His eyes narrowed, sharp even in the dim light.
"It's a chemical weapon," he said. "Joker Venom forces uncontrollable laughter until suffocation. Fear Toxin induces extreme hallucinations of your worst fears."
"That is... a little scary, if I'm being honest." I blinked, muffled behind the mask. "And a little ridiculous."
"Tell that to the dozens of victims we've pulled out of Arkham," Robin muttered, already adjusting his own mask. "Joker thinks it's hilarious."
"Hilarious?" I repeated, frowning. "Laughter that kills? That is not humor, that is cruelty."
"Exactly," Batman said flatly. "That's why you wear the mask. You don't want to find out what either of those feels like."
"On Tamaran, toxins are burned out of the blood with heat and light. My body resists most poisons already."
"Not these," Batman cut me off, voice sharper now. "I don't care how tough you think you are, Joker Venom will stop your heart. Scarecrow's toxin will break your mind. This mask isn't optional."
The weight in his tone made me pause. He wasn't just being cautious. He knew.
"Fine," I muttered, tugging at the mask as if it was a nuisance, though I didn't remove it. "But if it fogs up while I fight, I'm blaming you."
"You'll live," Batman said with a hint of a smile before slipping on his own mask, already moving down the corridor. Robin and I followed, his smaller frame slipping easily into the shadows.
Cold metal hissed in the dark, and suddenly Zsasz lunged out of the shadows, knife gleaming in his hand. His eyes were wild, fever-bright, and his skin was scored with countless tally marks.
"You're new," he rasped, his knife catching the weak light. "I do enjoy a fresh canvas."
He came for me first.
Instinct surged. Red light flared from my ring as I raised a construct shield, catching the blade before it carved into me. He was fast, faster than I expected, slicing around the shield and slashing toward my side.
The blade bit into my side before I could adjust the shield fully. Pain flared sharp and immediate, and I staggered, red energy flaring erratically around me.
"Red!" Batman's voice boomed from beside me as he slammed into Zsasz, knocking him back with a controlled but brutal strike. He positioned himself between me and the killer in an instant, cape whipping around us like a living shadow.
