You're still buzzing with the lingering high of accomplishment when you step out of the studio. Today went really, really well. Looking back on it, you're not even sure what you were so nervous about. You should've known you'd be able to keep up. Demons are naturally stronger, faster, more precise. By human standards, you were kind of always bound to excel.
"Amazing job, [Name]!" the dance instructor claps, her palms smacking together over and over like she can't quite contain her excitement. "Wow, you really are talented! This is practically unheard of! From what I saw today, there's no doubt in my mind that you're ready to debut!"
"Thanks," you say, smiling gratefully as you bow your head. "That really means a lot."
You appreciate the vote of confidence, and you're finally feeling more sure of yourself. The only doubts that still remain are about whether or not it's a good idea for a demon like you to become an idol. But seeing as your intentions are pure, it should be fine, right...? It has to be.
Surely.
Doubts aside, you quickly part ways with the instructor, and as soon as you step into the hallway, several people are already waiting for you.
"Great job, girl!" Zoey practically squeals, throwing her hands up as if she's celebrating a victory of her own. "You did so, so well!"
Mira leans her shoulder against the wall, arms folded, smirking. "Sounds like you've pretty much already gotten a vote of approval. I can't lie, you're definitely idol material. Even though you're not... exactly like us. If you get what I mean."
Of course you know what she means. You're nothing like them. Not in the ways that matter most. But since you're in no hurry to expose your demonic self, you just smile and nod.
"Don't worry,"you say. "I'm good at keeping secrets. No one will ever find out."
You keep your voice hushed, careful not to mention the word demon. Careful, always careful. Today wasn't about that anyway. Today was about proving that you can do this, and apparently, you can.
Rumi steps forward then, lips curling into a softer, deeper smile. "You're incredible, [Name]. Really. Thank you for making all this effort. I know what I did before wasn't okay, and I still regret it... but I want to focus on the good that came from this. And I think you'll be an amazing fit for us. You'll be the face of Huntrix in no time."
Her words catch you off guard. Face of HUNTR/X? You?
"I wouldn't go that far," you deny, shaking your head hastily. "Bobby said people will be excited about a new member, sure, but there's no guarantee they'll like me. It might take time."
"Of course they'll like you," Rumi blurts, frowning as if the suggestion itself insults her. Her brows pinch together tightly. "Why wouldn't they? If they don't like you, then..."
"Something's wrong with them."
—is what she thinks, but for obvious reasons, she doesn't say it out loud.
You blink a few times, gesturing for her to continue. "Then... what?"
"Oh, uh, nothing," she says, quickly throwing on a smile. "I just meant that I don't think it's going to happen, realistically. I'm sure they'll all love you right away."
You mumble a soft "I hope so", but your mind drifts as you imagine it: the lights, the roar of the crowd, countless gazes locked onto you with admiration and awe. For once in your long existence, people might actually see you, cheer for you, care about you. The thought makes your chest flutter with a joy you're not sure you can contain.
